Change. Your call.

by stephen on November 7, 2008

Delta: the greek symbol, that to us, symbolizes change.

Change: some fear it.

Change: some try to ride, direct, and usher it in.

Change: the inevitable constant associated with time, having only a variable of rate (i.e. rate of change).

I will say the following about change.  It’s upon us.  Now, you might think I speak of the obvious [high profile] example of the presidency.   I do, but not explicitly, it does indeed fall under the umbrella of the change I speak to.

[side note - Obama's new blog is already up, and you can even apply for a job click here]

The change I speak of specifically correlates with this economic downturn, and I view it [financial meltdown] as  having one silver lining. It will force us to deal with change.

As we move forward - post advent of the internet-  things will be re-made/re-engineered/re-purposed - and while gov. is one area, health care, mobile, tech, and instrumentation will follow.  If anything, this downturn will re-purpose tech itself to focus on the things that matter.  It will be those who seek to solve real problems that will really win (read $$ for entrepreneurs), not the dude whom looks to be the next Facebook or digg  (that’s a fool’s errand).

Today, I was speaking with one of my business partners, and was prodding him to get on board with picking a problem [a big tough one] that we could focus on, and lend our talents to - in order to effect good.   He was lukewarm [ lucky for me, I'm thick headed, and will continue to be 'unreasonable' on this front]

I spoke with my sister yesterday, and was inquiring about mood regarding election (her being from NH [read conservative])  and asked for her input.  She was very insightful [I mean she is my sister after all - what do you expect:) ]. She put forward the opinion that it is in fact time for more involvement on the civic front from our citizenry.    I couldn’t agree more.

I’ll be interrogating other friends of mine in the near future to determine their temperature regarding this subject matter of change.

I think that, while the new ’sexy’ may be [and rightfully so] - ‘design’;  real value comes from tackling sticky, tough, and unruly problems - like energy. (Naturally design has some role to play in that, but it will not be the sexy advertisement like ‘design’)

So, I close firmly convicted in my sense of renewed hope that this downturn, this change of national mood, will in fact force US to re-prioritize the pursuits we put our talents towards.  When WE do that, we all win, and win big (which of course we must by virtue of the situation we put ourselves in).

Either way, change comes; you can:  try and ride the bull ~ or ~ stand by, and take the chance of being stampeded.

[your call] - I’m gonna go get my leather gloves and cowboy hat - yeeehaaaahh!  (feel free to make fun of me the next time you see me for that last line)

be good.
