//Think//Speak//Be : A Process

November 9th, 2008 · No Comments · Frameworks

I used to walk by a window in the student union building when I was in college - and on that window was the following message:

Be the change you wish to see in the world ~ Gandhi

I totally buy into that.  There is something I have to offer, with respect to executing on becoming that change, and you probably guessed it - I offer a process.

The process is illustrated in the image above: Your thoughts turn into your words, and your words turn into your actions.   Ergo - watch your thoughts, for they are your destiny.

It takes time though - and of course most of that time is a function of the SELF restraints we place on ourselves.  [guilty as charged].

The point being - you can go set the world ablaze tomorrow if you let yourself, and that begins with allowing yourself to believe that you can.

Simple advice, tough execution, profound impact ~

Change. Your call.

November 7th, 2008 · No Comments · Frameworks

Delta: the greek symbol, that to us, symbolizes change.

Change: some fear it.

Change: some try to ride, direct, and usher it in.

Change: the inevitable constant associated with time, having only a variable of rate (i.e. rate of change).

I will say the following about change.  It’s upon us.  Now, you might think I speak of the obvious [high profile] example of the presidency.   I do, but not explicitly, it does indeed fall under the umbrella of the change I speak to.

[side note - Obama's new blog is already up, and you can even apply for a job click here]

The change I speak of specifically correlates with this economic downturn, and I view it [financial meltdown] as  having one silver lining. It will force us to deal with change.

As we move forward - post advent of the internet-  things will be re-made/re-engineered/re-purposed - and while gov. is one area, health care, mobile, tech, and instrumentation will follow.  If anything, this downturn will re-purpose tech itself to focus on the things that matter.  It will be those who seek to solve real problems that will really win (read $$ for entrepreneurs), not the dude whom looks to be the next Facebook or digg  (that’s a fool’s errand).

Today, I was speaking with one of my business partners, and was prodding him to get on board with picking a problem [a big tough one] that we could focus on, and lend our talents to - in order to effect good.   He was lukewarm [ lucky for me, I'm thick headed, and will continue to be 'unreasonable' on this front]

I spoke with my sister yesterday, and was inquiring about mood regarding election (her being from NH [read conservative])  and asked for her input.  She was very insightful [I mean she is my sister after all - what do you expect:) ]. She put forward the opinion that it is in fact time for more involvement on the civic front from our citizenry.    I couldn’t agree more.

I’ll be interrogating other friends of mine in the near future to determine their temperature regarding this subject matter of change.

I think that, while the new ’sexy’ may be [and rightfully so] - ‘design’;  real value comes from tackling sticky, tough, and unruly problems - like energy. (Naturally design has some role to play in that, but it will not be the sexy advertisement like ‘design’)

So, I close firmly convicted in my sense of renewed hope that this downturn, this change of national mood, will in fact force US to re-prioritize the pursuits we put our talents towards.  When WE do that, we all win, and win big (which of course we must by virtue of the situation we put ourselves in).

Either way, change comes; you can:  try and ride the bull ~ or ~ stand by, and take the chance of being stampeded.

[your call] - I’m gonna go get my leather gloves and cowboy hat - yeeehaaaahh!  (feel free to make fun of me the next time you see me for that last line)

be good.

The things you don’t see coming

November 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Just in case you thought that things were compicated enough.

I ask you this, what happens when we have to deal with both the moral and ethical question regarding the BIOENGINEERING of things such as human organs, life, and genetic expression choice?

Yes, it is coming sooner than you think.

Our challenges today, will seem like small potatoes when we have to figure out how to govern our capabilities to extend, harvest, and create new forms of life.

I kid you not, it comes sooner than you think from the biotech and bio-engineering sector.

That having been said, be aware; read what you can (jaun enriquez) and don’ be surprised, for I have already told you about things you did not see coming.

And so it begins…

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

And so it begins.  On this historic night America has chosen to usher in a new era, and moved America closer to fulfilling it’s desire to ‘form a more perfect union’.  I am thankful to have participated and witnessed this event.

However, this is not about me.  It’s about US, it’s about YOU.  Point of fact is that the work has yet to begin.

Now it is time to deliver on the promise of change, and guess what -  THAT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY - like you and me. There is momentum for change in this country, now when we are in desperate need, that has not been seen in some time.

It’s time for participation, on all fronts, regardless of political affilliation, and there are a number of ways to do so.  I’m not going into them now, it’s a celebratory night.  However, in the near future, I hope to serve as an example of how to engage, and also provide some ways for others to do so, because in the end America benefits.

Cynics, pleases feel free to verbally object, I welcome the fuel.

You want some persepctive? - Try on Uncle Juan Enriquez -

November 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Frameworks

So, I don’t think I’m the only one who wants to know what the F***K is going on out there in the economy - and to that end I’ve been looking around for perspective that is outside what CNBC is telling us.

The more I look, the more I find we might just be totally screwed. It’s fine, for if that’s the case then let’s just acknowledge it, roll our sleeves up, and get to work. Below is a sobering talk from one of the smartest dudes around. Not only that, but there are proposed actions to be taken in order to start climbing out of the hole we’re in.

Watch the video. Don’t just stick your head in the sand - this is still America: chin-up kids.

“The most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands.  ” —CDC/National Center for Infectious Diseases

So there ya go - go invest in some hand soap, and wash your mofo’n hands - especially the kiddos.

Hollywood…

November 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Fun

Hollywood.  To me - it’s whatever.  I think the great, and at the same time, not so great thing about Hollywood, is that you can be whomever you want.  Today our expedition team ran into some folks who thought themselves a bit more than most humans.  I dare say, superhuman.  Well, except for Homer J. Simpson - he’s just like you and me.

However, things started to get a bit gray, no thanks to the elephant in the sky:

Which was then followed by, of all things: Rain - which is of course a rarity in SoCal.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I were not to state that the last two images were captured by the impeccable Andrew Woodward - the esteemed ring leader of our expedition team.

Family Reunion!!!!

November 1st, 2008 · No Comments · Fun

Went to the San Diego zoo yesterday.  Saw some of my relatives.  It was a good time.  Shooting critters at the zoo with a 50mm macro lens = fail.  So this is what you get, an uncompelling image that will likely NOT entice you to go.   However, if you click the image you can go to the SD zoo site, and there you will find a whole lot of enticing content.  :)

IMHO - It’s worth the trip.

Esquire E-Ink cover…. F***K That S***T!!!!!!!!!!!

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Visual

I might be crazy, then again I might just be crazy like a fox.

Below is a video of Esquire’s new and groovy cover that has - get this - an electric display in it!!

A boring clip, but it illustrates the workings

Okay. Here’s what I think: We’re supposed to get on board with a magazine pushing technology that offers VERY little value add - with respect to the crappy images that can be displayed AND accept the added waste that comes with the magazine?

Sorry I’ll pass. And, just so we’re on the same page - F**K that S***T - do these guys live under a rock ?  Don’t they know those who win are those who use less - or at least that’s the way’s it’s trending. Ugghhh - desperation (the print industry) is not a good look.

Anyways, I’m not the only one who thinks the cover blows - here is George Lois - a legend in his own right, and he thinks from an artistic perspective the cover fails.  Watch the video below - Lois also gives great insight about creativity in general. Specifically, I like his insight about depth of passion and how it lends to creativity, for creativity is not a lighting bolt phenomenon.

be good.
