Happy New Year everyone!

On the last day of 2008 I got a chance to collaborate with my friend Patrick on some media pieces for his blog.

This year Patrick runs the Boston Marathon in partnership with Boston Partners in Education - a non profit. Watch the video below to learn more :)

(Bear with me, my video skills still need some work.)

The joys of gaming?

by stephen on December 28, 2008

One great thing about getting back east is I finally got my hands on my canon 5d.

I broke out my crappy sigma 17-50mm lens - so I could get a feel for wide angle shooting.

(You can see the heavy vignetting, but that’s what you get with kit lenses ;)

Kolby, my nephew, was gaming on the floor, so I  got in there an snapped a few images.

I don’t know if gaming is fun, I gave it up looooonnggg ago.

Based on Kolb’s reactions I’d say it’s engaging at the very least… the jury is still out on ‘fun’ though.

The ups and downs of gaming

Hmm... maybe it's just the down and down of gaming....

I might be crazy, then again I might just be crazy like a fox.

Below is a video of Esquire’s new and groovy cover that has - get this - an electric display in it!!

A boring clip, but it illustrates the workings

Okay. Here’s what I think: We’re supposed to get on board with a magazine pushing technology that offers VERY little value add - with respect to the crappy images that can be displayed AND accept the added waste that comes with the magazine?

Sorry I’ll pass. And, just so we’re on the same page - F**K that S***T - do these guys live under a rock ?  Don’t they know those who win are those who use less - or at least that’s the way’s it’s trending. Ugghhh - desperation (the print industry) is not a good look.

Anyways, I’m not the only one who thinks the cover blows - here is George Lois - a legend in his own right, and he thinks from an artistic perspective the cover fails.  Watch the video below - Lois also gives great insight about creativity in general. Specifically, I like his insight about depth of passion and how it lends to creativity, for creativity is not a lighting bolt phenomenon.

I love this kind of stuff. Style, functionality, and added safety, all in one. I’m a bike rider, and from a pure aerodynamics perspective, glasses help so much -  glasses keep your eyes protected from both wind and insects of the flying kind.

The Hindsight, by NIKE,  improves the field of vision for riders by about 25degrees. Cool stuff. Check out the visuals below. You’ll see what I mean.

Concept for glasses by Bill May

Like I won’t be buying these when available.   On a similar note: can anyone tell me why I can see horizontally 180degrees,  but vertically (like from floor to ceiling) I cannot see 180degrees.  WTF?

Communication Matters …

by stephen on September 10, 2008

As promised, here’s a fun little blooper real of us jamokes trying to talk in front of a camera.  No worries, after we saw how bad we suuuuucked, we came up with a better concept.   Ha!  (Caution - there’s music - check your volume - make sure it’s really loud!!)

be good [ communicators :) ]

The coolest stats you’ve ever seen.

by stephen on September 5, 2008

Me, you, and the rest of the human race are visual.  We, as in all of us, are also good at gathering observations in large quantities.

Those observations are the basis for many disciplines, including statics.

I’ve always found statistics a rather dry go of things, but seemingly so much potential - a visual element with observations - geez - what could be better?

This guy below does stats better than most.  It’s entertaining, and it tells the story based on data.  That is compelling.

Have a look below and see if this changes your thinking.

If you dug the graphs - you can find out more and play around with the software (now owned by google) here

Composing in the back yard.

by stephen on August 31, 2008

Photography, para mi, runs a little something like this.

“The more you shoot, the more you wanna shoot. The less you shoot, the less you want to shoot.”

Needless to say, with the arrival of an actual camera - I am wanting to shoot more and more.

Today I was composing in the backyard- pictures in this instance - but for those maestros out there, you could be rocking the musical interpretation of “composing”.

Anyways - here’s what my eye spied today.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Patience is a virtue? I’ll test that…

by stephen on August 19, 2008

Photobucket

So, the little feller above would be my nephew. While the wee little lad is indeed more fun than a barrel full of monkeys, he happens not to be a testament to the possibility that I might have some virtue. (For the record though - I’d vote myself a pretty badass uncle, just sayin’)

Instead, the point is that the images taken of this young man were done so with MY new canon 5d (whooo!!!!) back in NH (boooo!!). (Pet hermit crab, for those wondering).

Why is my camera in NH?

Because I bought it from an online vendor on the east coast, and wanted my sister to vet the thing for me and make sure it was as advertised. No sense in sending it across the country only to send the thing back if it were less than stellar.

I won’t be seeing my camera for a couple weeks, my sister was nice enough to inform me that she will be testing my patience by withholding my camera so she can use it on a photog gig she has next week.

PFFSSSHHHH!!! - What?!

Oh well, I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same, and this is a good chance to work on building a virtuous bit of patience. . . you do what you can ;)

be good.
